Ciao, I'm Amby! I moved to Italy in 2022, and here are some of my favorite hidden gems in Naples.

When people plan a trip to Naples, the same three things always come up. Eat pizza, visit Pompeii, and climb Mount Vesuvius. And to be fair, those are iconic experiences and absolutely worth doing.

But after living in Naples for several years, I have learned something important. Like most places, the real magic of this city usually appears when you wander a little off the typical tourist path.

Naples rewards curiosity. Turn down a random street and you might find a tiny espresso bar filled with locals arguing about football. Walk up a hill and suddenly the entire Bay of Naples opens up in front of you. Explore a park above the city and you realize Naples can feel surprisingly peaceful too.

If you want to experience the hidden gems in Naples Italy, these are some of my favorite places that many visitors miss.

Hidden Gems in Naples Italy (Quick List)

Short on time? Here are the best hidden gems in Naples Italy:

Map of Hidden Gems in Naples Italy

Naples is a city full of surprises, and many of these spots are scattered across the city and nearby coastline. Here is a quick map showing where each of these hidden gems is located so you can plan your itinerary more easily.

1. Hilltop Hidden Gems in Naples, Italy: Castel Sant’Elmo and Certosa e Museo di San Martino

If you want the view that makes you fall in love with Naples instantly, start here. High above the city in the Vomero district sits Castel Sant’Elmo, a dramatic star-shaped fortress that has been watching over Naples since the 1300s.

From the terrace, the entire city stretches out below you. Mount Vesuvius rises in the distance, the Bay of Naples sparkles in the sunlight, and the historic center spills down toward the sea. It is the kind of panorama that makes you pause for a moment and think, wow, this place really is extraordinary.

Right next door is one of the most beautiful cultural sites in Naples, Certosa e Museo di San Martino. This former Carthusian monastery feels like a peaceful sanctuary above the busy streets below. Inside you will find marble cloisters, frescoed ceilings, quiet gardens, and a museum dedicated to Neapolitan history.

One of the highlights is the Presepe Cuciniello, an elaborate traditional nativity scene with hundreds of tiny handcrafted figures. Neapolitans take their nativity scenes very seriously, and this one is truly impressive. If you enjoy history and views in equal measure, this stop is hard to beat.

You can also explore the site with a Castel Sant’Elmo and San Martino guided tour if you want deeper insight into the history.

2. Seaside Hidden Gem in Napoli: Marechiaro

Tucked along the Posillipo coastline is one of Naples’ most charming little secrets. The tiny fishing village of Marechiaro feels like something straight out of an old Italian movie.

Colorful boats bob gently in the water while narrow staircases lead down to the sea. Bougainvillea drapes over pastel houses and small restaurants sit right along the shoreline. It is quiet, romantic, and wonderfully atmospheric.

Marechiaro has inspired poets and musicians for generations. There is even a famous Neapolitan song dedicated to it. When you visit, it is easy to understand why.

The best way to experience Marechiaro is very simple. Come around sunset, order a spritz or a glass of local Falanghina wine, and watch the sky turn soft shades of pink over the Bay of Naples. It is one of those moments that perfectly captures la dolce vita.

3. Nature Hidden Gem: Wander Through Bosco di Capodimonte and Visit the Palace

Naples is energetic, passionate, and occasionally (ok, almost always) a little chaotic. Which is exactly why locals such as myself love escaping to Bosco di Capodimonte.

This enormous park sits above the city and feels like a breath of fresh air. It was originally built as a royal hunting reserve for the Bourbon kings, and today it is one of the most peaceful places in Naples.

You will see families having picnics, couples strolling under huge ancient trees, and locals walking their dogs along shady paths (Pippa, my toy poodle, loves this park.) The views across the city are beautiful, especially on a clear day when Mount Vesuvius stands tall in the distance.

Stop by the Stufa dei Fiori for a coffee or aperitivo. They also make delicious spremuta, fresh squeezed juice, with citrus from the garden. This lovely and peaceful cafe is one of my favorite hidden gems in Naples, Italy.

At the center of the park sits Capodimonte Palace, which now houses one of Italy’s most impressive art museums. The collection includes masterpieces by Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael. Even if you are not normally a museum person, the palace is worth a visit. Personally, the ballroom is my favorite.

You can also book a Capodimonte Palace guided tour if you want to dive deeper into the art and history.

4. Relaxing Hidden Gem: Soak in the Thermal Baths of Stufe di Nerone and Stroll Through Bacoli

One of the best hidden escapes near Naples is only about 30 minutes away. In the volcanic area known as the Campi Flegrei, you will find the natural thermal spa Stufe di Nerone.

The name translates to “Nero’s Baths,” and according to legend the Roman emperor himself once relaxed in these thermal waters. Today the spa still feels wonderfully ancient. Warm mineral pools sit among trees while soft steam rises from the ground.

Spending a few hours soaking in the thermal baths is incredibly relaxing. It feels like stepping into a calmer, slower version of Italy. Warning: These thermal baths aren't the cleanest or most pristine, so do exercise sanitary caution. I always bring a bathing suit, robe, towel, flip flops, swim cap (obligatory,) and my toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, face wash, shower gel, lotion), for a good wash right after I'm done at the terme. Many of these items are available for purchase/ rent at the terme.

After your spa visit, drive a few minutes to the nearby seaside town of Bacoli. This coastal town feels very different from Naples. The pace is slower, the harbor is quiet, and seafood restaurants line the waterfront.

If you have time, visit Lago Miseno, a peaceful lake that once served as an important Roman naval base. The whole area is filled with fascinating ancient history.

You might enjoy this private car Campi Flegrei tour.

5. Accessible Hidden Gem: Ride the Monte Echia Elevator

One of the newest hidden viewpoints in Naples is something many visitors still do not know about. The Monte Echia Elevator connects the Santa Lucia waterfront with the top of Pizzofalcone hill.

The ride itself only takes about thirty seconds. Suddenly you emerge onto a terrace with a sweeping view across the Bay of Naples.

From the top you can see Castel dell’Ovo sitting by the water, Mount Vesuvius rising beyond the city, and boats gliding slowly across the Mediterranean. It is peaceful and scenic, and surprisingly uncrowded compared to other viewpoints.

Monte Echia is also historically significant. This hill is believed to be where the ancient Greek founders of Naples first settled more than 2,500 years ago. Standing here feels a little like standing at the beginning of the city’s story.

6. Spooky Hidden Gems: Explore the Catacombs of San Gennaro & Fontanelle Cemetery

If you like things that are a little spOooKy, this one's for you! Naples has an entire world hidden beneath its streets, and exploring it is one of the most fascinating experiences in the city. Beneath the lively neighborhoods and buzzing piazzas lies a network of ancient burial chambers, caves, and sacred spaces that tell the story of Naples over thousands of years.

One of the most impressive underground sites is the Catacombs of San Gennaro, located in the Rione Sanità neighborhood. These vast burial chambers date back nearly two thousand years and contain some of the oldest Christian frescoes in southern Italy. Walking through the wide stone corridors feels almost surreal, like stepping quietly into another era of the city.

Not far away is another deeply unique site, the Fontanelle Cemetery. This enormous cave is filled with thousands of skulls and bones that were collected during centuries of epidemics and overcrowded cemeteries. Over time, Neapolitans developed a tradition called “adopting a skull,” where locals would care for a skull and pray for the soul in exchange for protection or small miracles.

It might sound a little eerie at first, but the tradition reveals something beautiful about Naples. The city has always had a very intimate relationship with history, spirituality, and the idea that the past is never really far away.

Check out this Rione Sanità walking tour, where you will discover Rione Sanità and enjoy a typical street food tasting.

7. Mysterious Hidden Gem: Descend Into Naples Underground

If the catacombs fascinate you, you will probably love Naples Underground as well. Beneath the city lies a labyrinth of tunnels, Roman aqueducts, and ancient passageways. This is a great activity for extremely hot, or very rainy, days.

For thousands of years these tunnels served many purposes. They were part of the water system during Greek and Roman times. During World War II they were used as bomb shelters.

Today visitors can explore this hidden world on guided tours. Some parts even require squeezing through narrow tunnels, which makes the whole experience feel like a mini adventure.

You can book a Naples Underground tour, where you will admire the remains of the Greek-Roman Aqueduct and the Roman Theater.

8. Regal Hidden Gem: Visit the Royal Palace of Caserta

Just outside Naples sits one of the most spectacular palaces in Europe, yet many travelers surprisingly miss it.

The Reggia di Caserta, often called the “Versailles of Italy,” is a massive royal palace built in the 18th century for the Bourbon kings. The scale of the place is almost unbelievable. The palace contains more than 1,200 rooms, grand staircases, opulent halls, and frescoed ceilings that rival some of the most famous palaces in Europe.

But the gardens might be even more impressive than the palace itself. A long, dramatic avenue stretches for miles behind the palace, lined with fountains, sculptures, and cascading waterfalls that lead toward the mountains in the distance. Walking through the gardens feels like stepping into a royal fantasy.

The palace has also appeared in several films, including Star Wars, which gives you an idea of just how cinematic it looks. Fun fact: I also acted in a film that was shot in the Reggia di Caserta! The film, The Thomas Crown Affair, directed by Michael B. Jordan, comes out in 2027.

If you are staying in Naples, Caserta makes a fantastic half day trip. You can book a Reggia di Caserta guided tour, which helps bring the palace’s fascinating royal history to life.

9. Yummy Hidden Gem: Take a Cooking Class in a Neapolitan Home

One of the best ways to experience Naples is through its food. And while you can absolutely eat your way through the city, there is something special about learning to cook Neapolitan dishes in a local home.

Instead of a large commercial cooking class, some experiences invite you into a real Neapolitan kitchen where you cook alongside a local host. It feels less like a class and more like spending the afternoon with a new Italian friend.

You might learn how to prepare dishes like fresh pasta, traditional Neapolitan ragù, gnocchi, or classic desserts. The best part comes at the end, when everyone sits down together to enjoy the meal with wine and conversation.

It is relaxed, personal, and a wonderful glimpse into everyday life in Naples. Experiences like this remind you that Italian cooking is not just about recipes. It is about hospitality, family, and taking time to enjoy a meal together.

Try a Neapolitan home cooking experience, a traditional cooking class hosted by a local home cook, where you prepare a full meal and dine together afterward.

10. Romantic Hidden Gem: Cruise Along the Posillipo Coast

One of the most beautiful parts of Naples is the Posillipo coastline. The best way to explore it is from the water. My husband's company, Seaside Napoli, runs a great sunset aperitivo boat tour along the Posillipo coast. Mention the code AMY26 for a discount.

Fun fact: Marco actually took me on this for our first date! We enjoyed aperitivo and watched the sunset as we admired historical seaside villas, ancient Roman ruins, and the view of the gulf of Napoli. Highly recommend!

Final Thoughts

Naples is not a city that reveals itself all at once. It rewards wandering, curiosity, and a willingness to explore beyond the obvious.

These hidden gems in Naples Italy show a different side of the city. One that is peaceful, beautiful, and full of fascinating history.

I hope you are able to enjoy Napoli as much as I do!

Un bacio,

Amby
